fishing in Canada

Canada '92
log cabin in Ontario
Cabin belonging to the family of our excellent host, Jim Mac.  With extensions, the place stretched about 150 feet on a remote tract of lakefront land in mid-Ontario.  Jim is a pilot, and flew us in from Beloit, WI over one Memorial Day weekend.  Air temperatures in the day ranged from 40-50° F, which dipped into the 30's at night.  The water was the highest Jim has ever seen, an ominous sign for the fishing ahead...

Our host and pilot, Jim, with Jack waving.  According to the locals, temperatures were in the 80's just the week before.  Hmmm
finally wetting a line
Travel to this remote locale required, in order, automobile, plane, automobile and finally a 20 mile boat ride just to reach the cabin.  All that was missing was a train ride.
northern pike taken on a tube jig
Walleyes were few and far between, so pike became the backup plan, with this one measuring 32 inches, caught on a crawfish tube jig

Indeed the water was high, as you can see the bridge at near washout level in the background
gimme my mepps back!

These two gentlemen were hired to replace some logs on the cabin, which they accomplished during our stay.  They brought along their sled team of six beautiful huskies and tools, all on their 14 foot aluminum boat.  Though the two appeared disheveled and rough, they were actually polite, well-spoken Englishmen, who apparently left their mother country for a more idealistic life in the wilds of Canada.

Although the fishing was tough, it was a fun and memorable time, from the flight in and out to the fried bologna and cheese sandwiches.  The land is harsh from the winters, with lichen growth underfoot and areas of tundra, but the place still teems with life.  When I awoke in the morning, I could see my breath inside the cabin.  I would love to spend a year there and experience all four seasons.
