It has just been
brought to my attention by UK carp angler Brian Johnston that the IGFA
considers the use of the hair rig illegal for any fish caught for record
book consideration. Specifically, according to Rules for fishing
in fresh and saltwater, Equipment regulations, paragraph G. Hooks for bait fishing Section 1.."...hooks
must be imbedded
in, or securely attached to the bait. And Section2..."The use of a dangling or swinging
hook is prohibited..."

So based on this
rule, the IGFA has retired Christian Baldemair's 82 lb. 12 oz. (37.30 kg)
world record, and will also retire the next runner up. All told,
the group will retire six record fish, due to the use of the hair rig.
The rule was made
to discourage the snagging or foul-hooking of fish, but the hair rig was
devised to hook the fish in the mouth, which it does nearly 100% of the
time. Of course, these arguments were made to the association, but
"rules are rules."
