2001 Chicago Carp Classic

The first of a couple of football-field sized barges makes its way down the River

The Des Plaines River in Joliet provided convenient access and an airy backdrop, while the Chicago River in downtown Chicago had the surreal surrounding of towering buildings.  There was ample room for anglers, though some complained that the peg spacing was too close together, with lines easily drifting into another's peg.

Site access would have been more ample had it not been for the Latin American festival, which went on at the same time right in the Park.  The festival provided a good source for lunch though - the three-enchilada dinner deserved a three-fork rating, or as Homer Simpson would say, "nine thumbs up."  ;o)

A second goliath of a barge floats down the river -  this one
actually hit the wall in front of the southern section, taking
out several members lines.  Talk about hazards of the river.

The big difference in techniques this year compared to last was that many more anglers were using a ball of ground bait applied directly above the line for more precise feeding.  These were either applied directly on the line, over a sinker, or with the assistance of a method feeder to hold the ball onto the line.  This technique is also referred to as "pack-baiting" on some of the pay lakes.

The Des Plaines River also has a good amount of broken rock, especially towards the middle of the river.  Most anglers stayed on the closer side of the mid point, while a few ventured casts towards the far wall.  Even with the shorter casts, a number of carp broke lines against rocks or other debris from the bottom.  The river bottom was also tough on one's tackle supply, as PJ Perea of the Illinois DNR noted, "I left about three pounds of lead out there."
