List of catfish bait to use include mostly live fish like sunfish, suckers, carp or other rough fish. Because of the size of the bait used, use larger wide bend hooks like a kahle in sizes 2/0 to 5/0, or try the circle hooks popular with saltwater fisherman. Instead of setting the hook, one simply increases tension and pulls steadily until the hook makes its way to the corner of the fish's mouth. Because of the circular shape, the hook can actually slide through the gullet unencumbered, until finally snagging into the corner of the mouth. Once one learns not to set hard, the percentage of hookups increases dramatically. A good river tip is to use special flattened slip sinkers that will not roll in the current like an egg or bullet sinker might. During the spring, the use of sour bait can be quite deadly, since the catfish are used to foraging for other winter killed fish. Sour bait simply refers to carved and chunked fish that has been allowed to ripen and sour, emitting a wonderful stink, that calls to the ever foraging catfish.
