Jeff Turner goes over the rules.
Team USA's Lee Young
Sunday started off warm and clear, a welcome change from Saturday's downpour.  The forecast did call for rain later in the afternoon, but the bulk of the day stayed clear.  Expectations ran high for stronger catches from everybody, with the general plan of feeding and catching the less spooked smaller fish first (and getting on the board), then concentrating on the larger fish.  For the second day, everybody that fished section 1 now fished section 2, and vice versa.
carp on..
..and safely in Mick's hands
Team captain Mick Thill drew a mid peg in the tougher south section, but he worked on all areas of his peg, drawing fish from where he could, with a few carp from the far wall with a waggler rod and reel.  He was also pegged next to the mad bomber, who lobbed softball-sized ground bait balls into his swim.  Then he followed that up with additional loose corn - that's a lot of feed. Still, Mick was able to pull a very impressive 19.4 lbs., more than double the combined weight of every angler in his section, winning the section and second place overall. Always in motion, with the presence of mind to keep the fish feeding, he hurled maggots with one hand and battled a carp with the other.  Mick showed how devastating a take-apart pole, shock-absorbing elastic, 1 1/2 lb. test line, the proper sensitive float, and a hook the size of this letter "G" can be on a wide variety of species and sizes.
Bob Esbensen nets a..

Team Canada's Lonnie King with one of seven carp

Canada's Allen Leeson with 0.04 lbs - peg 1
USA's John Wilkins with 1.58 lbs.  peg 2
Canada's Barry Croke with 0.06 lbs - peg 5
Last year Canada's Allen Leeson dominated with his heavy carp and goldfish catches, but this year was a different story, especially after drawing pegs on each side of the plants outflow over the two days.  Last year that very end peg was the site of his domination, but this year with the downpour and new peg section, things were a little different. Being the good sport that he is, Allen proudly displays his catch of four shiners.  USA's John Wilkins did outstanding for his peg, actually catching a number of "edible" fish like bluegills and a perch, as well as a goldfish and shiners.  John also did well considering his thumb got wrenched by some moronic dog owner whose pet was running around freely, breaking one of the rod tips on his take-apart poles.  It's amusing now, but it wasn't so darn funny then (wish we had a picture of the dog).  Cops became involved, but a major international incident was avoided.  Cell phone provider Jerry Brown (from Chicago) must be wondering what his international roaming charges will look like ;-)
USA's Mircea Dascalescu weighing in his 11.8 lb. overtime carp
Mircea with one of two 11's
Team USA's Mircea Dascalescu also did extremely well, especially from a central peg (6) location.  Team Captain Mick Thill is the first to say that Mircea did just as well as he did, and more so, if that last 11 pound carp, which was hooked before time ran out, was landed just a few minutes earlier before the final whistle.

Canada's Fritz Vatter with 6.56 lbs - Peg 7
USA's Ian Hooper with 1.78 lbs. - Peg 8
Canada's Lewis Jones with 4.48 lbs. - Peg 9
USA's Kevin Hendren with 4.84 lbs. -Peg 10 "where's that bullhead?"

This stretch of the Little River proved relatively productive for these neighboring anglers.  Fritz scored well with 2 carp, 1 goldfish and a gobie, while Ian caught 2 goldfish and a number of shiners.  Lewis also caught a number of "edible" fish, including 11 perch, 3 bullhead catfish and a sunfish.  Kevin weighed in one near five pound carp, while one bullhead mysteriously disapeared from his keepnet - "there shouldn't be any holes, it's brand new!"  Kevin came the longest way for the match, flying in from Atlanta - he's the first southern angler to represent Team USA. This leads us to the top spot and the events heaviest total...

Lonnie King with part one of his total of 42 lbs..
..and with part 2 for lowest score - Peg 11

Team Canada's Lonnie King drew the previous day's winning Peg 11, and took full advantage with 7 carp and 1 goldfish for a whopping 42.08 lbs. and the event's highest individual total.  He concentrated solely on the carp and goldfish, using a stouter pole and heavier line.  The strategy certainly paid off.  With the clearing and more stable weather, Sunday provided much stronger results with 108.7 lbs. of fish and zero scratches.  Several anglers lost a number of larger carp, which could have made standings jump around, including Mick in his section, and Fritz and Ian in theirs.

The Medalists

1st - Lonnie King, CANADA
3rd - Mircea Dascalescu, USA          2nd - Mick Thill, USA

TEAM USA

Front - Jeff Kolodzinski, Chris Taglieri, Danny Murillo, John Wilkins
Back - Jon Rasmussen, Mircea Dascalescu, Bob Esbensen, Mick Thill, Lee Young
Missing - Kevin Hendren, Ian Hooper (who was taking Kevin to the airport)

Team USA still won the days match, 95 pts to 115 pts, and the two day overall victory of 226 to 265.  However, the margin of victory has become much smaller than last year's trouncing, indicating a stronger core of talented Canadian anglers.  The U.S. team missed international veterans Ray Wilson (stationed in Yugoslavia with the U.S. Air Force) and Renato Malafarina. The team also welcomed newcomer Jon Rasmussen, who was on leave from the Navy and his nuclear submarine duties. The team also wanted to express thanks to Jerry Brown, Tony Safranski and myself for helping coach the team, and Bill Taglieri for transporting bait, assisting with the weigh-in, and being a good dad. Also, kudos to Team Canada's Jeff Turner for organizing a successful match. A tentative rematch on U.S. soil is being scheduled, possibly in October. Until then, tight lines...
