CARP LORE

In
Japan and other parts of Asia, the carp symbolizes strength, which
is quite appropriate as anyone fortunate to have tied into one while angling
can attest to. The picture below depicts a young Japanese boy in ancient
samurai gear doing battle with a huge carp on a cane pole. Small figurines
depicting this scene were given to sons on what was originally called "Boy's
Day" in May, but is now known as "Children's Day," covering all genders
(there was a separate "Girl's Day"). The symbol of strength is also flown
in the sky via carp-shaped kites and streamers. The streamers are also
displayed on Children's Day, to wish strength and robustness to the offspring,
as well as symbolizing and celebrating all members of the family.
The idea of the carp as a symbol of strength is traced back to China, where a legendary saying states that if a carp can swim up the fast-flowing Hwang Ho river, it can become a dragon.
