Fish Tale: This may sound like a tall tale but I can assure you it is a true story. Having had a wonderful Thanksgiving I thought I would go out in the middle of a wind storm with wind gusts of up to 40 mph and grass fires all around the entire area in which I reside. For those of you that may not know the area in which I live in Oklahoma is having a horrible drought (we are about 1 and a half feet below normal for the area) and thus we have had some pretty vicious grass fires. So I go out in the middle of all this chaos, just me, the boys, and the shad on a mission for some serious fishing. After throwing out a couple of times I hooked the trophy bass of the 2005 season. He was hard to reel in with all that wind whipping us around but I was triumphant in the struggle and brought this cow in!

Date: October 2005

Hi : My name is Calvin Robillard and was fishing the lower niagara river near Queenston boat launch in oct 2005. I was using a rig with minnows fishing for those tasty little perch. I latched onto what I thought was a muskie . As I got it near the pier I noticed it was not a muskie but a sturgeon . I had no net and had to walk it down to the end of pier ( about 20 - 30 metres) After 25 mins. I managed to land it . This was my first sturgeon I ever caught. I quickly took a few pics , and weighed it ( 17 lbs ).
Thanks Calvin

Angler: Lori Miller
Age: 20
Type: Grass Carp
Weight: ~32 lbs
Length: ~3ft.
Released
Where: Port Richey, Florida, USA
Date: April 28th, 2005

It had stormed really bad causing a pond behind our apartment to become cloudy and nasty looking. This carp had been surfacing to breathe. My husband and I ran around the pond, following it, and third-time's-a-charm, caught it in my casting net. For a small time apartment complex pond, I was shocked that this big of a fish lived in it.

We didn't accurately weigh it or measure it, because the leasing center lady came out and was screaming at us for fishing. I stand 5'11", so we measured where I was holding the fish.

Bigheads! More fishing pictures from Iraq

Jim
I was checking out your website and seen all the pictures of soldiers on there so I though I would send you a few of my own. Every once in a while we have time to go fishing, about once a week usually. Most of the fish we catch here are different types of carp. I think the big silver ones are silver carp or bighead carp, I have to catch another one before I can get a good ID on them. I never looked at there gills and the big heads are supposed to be kind of splotched black or something. Anyway there are those and then the Asp and weve caught some real small Wels catfish but nothing worth taking pictures of. All of these were caught in Baghdad on Camp Liberty. I dont have any weights for any of them but i know the two bigest ones were probably 30+ and one over 20. Hope you can post some of them, take care. By the way, love your site. There are a lot of great pictures.

Location: Florida

Hey, Here are a couple large largemouth bass'. The one in the top photo was caught on a live shinner, sight-fishing in a canal. The one in the bottom photo was taken with a plastic worm - Texas Rigged. My guess for their weight is anywhere from 5 to 8 pounds. To be honest (and as you can probably tell, the camera makes them seem larger than they really are). - Tom D'Auria

Species: Striped bass
Length: 37in
Weight: 16lbs
Fate: Fajitas ;o)
Date: mid-Sep 04
Bait: 3" plastic shad
Where: Aquaducts neas Bakersfield

The day prior we were fishing and noticed that every time we caught a smaller striper this larger fish would come up and occasionally hit at them, biting one of our catches real good. That night we went and picked up a large plastic that looked closely to a stripe bass. The next day we propped up the pole and let it swim while we fished for smaller fish. About 2 hours later we got a hit. It took like 5 minutes to reel him in on a 15lb test. This aquaduct is loaded with stripe bass and catfish, all 2lbs and greater. I've never left there catching anything less than 10-15 fish.

Fish: Pike
Weight: 21 lb
Where: Lake Oich, Scotland

I stumbled over your site and thought I’d add a pic of my own if that’s ok? This fish was caught at Loch Oich that forms some of the great glen of Scotland. I hate to admit it but it was caught on a friend’s rod while he decided to go to the shops. It gave a decent fight but came in all too soon I am afraid. The Pike fight hard and fast in Scotland, even a nine pounder will give you a run for your money. The fish in the pic weighs 21lb. I do hope this picture will be of use to you. The fishwas caught on a dead roach bait on the 21st Oct 2003.

Bait: Bucktail spinner
Date: July 23, 2003
Angler: Bob Bird
Home: Kenai, AK
This 45 inch 26 pound pike was caught by Bob Bird of Kenai, Alaska, on one of Alaska's remotest rivers, the Nowitna on July 23, 2003. In use was a musky bucktail spinner with tandem single hooks, and was boated into a canoe by hand. The picture was taken on a muddy bar and Bob was nearly up to his knees in it. The fish was revived and released. Over 600 pike were caught by 4 anglers during a 9-day excursion, about 30 of which went over 15 pounds, the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game threshhold for trophy pike. Probably 15 fish went over 20 pounds.

Species: Musky
Dimensions: 52.7 inch, 38.5 lb
Body of water: Stonecoal Lake, WV
Bait: Mepp's Comet Mino
Date: May 14, 2003
Angler: Glenn Boyd
A “monster” was recently caught at Stonecoal Lake, breaking a record that has Stood for nearly half of a century.

Glenn Boyd broke one of the oldest records in the state on May 14, when he reeled in a 52.7 inch, 38.5 pound musky. The previous record for musky length was 52.5 inches: set by Lester Hayes in 1955.

The 44 year old Weston resident and his wife were fishing for trout at the Lewis County end of the lake. It was a warm, sunny day, but the normally clear water was milky as a result of recent rain.

Boyd was using a 6’6’’, medium action Berkley Bionix pole topped with a Shimano Spirex 2000FD reel. The reel was spooled with 8-pound test Berkley Trilene XL (Smooth Casting) line.

A large fish was spotted cruising the shoreline at about 5:00 P.M. Fishing with a Mepp’s Comet Mino, Boyd cast out to draw the fish’s attention.

“On the third or fourth cast, she grabbed it, “ said Boyd. A 50-minute battle ensued.

“She just about ran my line out twice,” said Boyd, adding that he was glad he was using a reel with a large capacity spool. “She wasn’t running real fast, but she was running strong.” Boyd said he could only let the fish fight.

Landing the fish was only half of the ordeal. Without knowing that he was in Possession of a new state record, Boyd had no intentions of keeping the fish. He spent nearly an hour and a half trying to revive the animal.

“I didn’t want to keep her, because she was such a magnificent animal,” said boyd. “Bass and musky have such a hard time reaching that size, and I’d just rather see them keep growing.”

“I can’t say that I would have been as eager to release her, if I had known she was a state record,” he admitted.

When efforts to release the fish failed, Boyd and his wife took it to Jerry’s Sporting Goods to have it measured and weighed. It was then that they realized that the fish had beaten the record for musky length.

The Boyds then contact a deputy with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department. The deputy witnessed the measurements, and put the couple in contact with the Division of Natural Resources.

Unable to certify the fish until the next day, DNR officials suggested the fish be put on ice. There was only one place at the Boyd residence that was large enough to accommodate the fish. “She took up the whole length of the bathtub with the tail sticking up,” said Boyd.

On May 15, the couple took the fish to the West Virginia Wildlife Center at French Creek. It was there that the fish was to be officially certified by DNR District 3 fisheries biologist Kevin Yokum.

“I was very impressed with Kevin Yokum,” said Boyd. “He is part of what I remembered about the experience. He showed a lot of enthusiasm about the fish.”

“He was being very meticulous, making sure of the measurements, and then he said “Gentlemen, we have a new record,” explained Boyd. “It was hard to believe.”

“A fish like this the fish of a lifetime,” said Yokum. He added that even in Canada, which is noted for large musky, that this would be an impressive catch.

Yokum stated that based upon growth-age studies on the species, he believed the fish to be between 11 and 14 years old. He explained that the age could be determined by examining the clethrum bone: a bone found behind the gill that has growth rings, similar to those found in trees.

“I believe there are fish that could shatter this record,” he said, sitting Stonecoal and Stonewall Jackson Lakes, along with the West Fork River. He added that his record would stand long enough to be published in the state’s fishing regulations manual.

“That’s a pretty good measurement of a fisherman’s success,” he said.

Boyd’s fish is not the first musky from Stonecoal to claim a state record. The Record for the species’ weight was also set at the local lake.

In 1997, Anna Marsh, also of Weston, claimed that record when she reeled in a musky weighing 49.75 pounds and measuring 50.37 inches. Like Boyd, Marsh was fishing for trout with light tackle when she landed her trophy. Marsh’s State record for musky weight still stands.

Hello
I enjoy looking at the fish pictures on your site. I hope you will post a picture of my largest walleye to date. It was 31.5" long and a girth of 20". I am holding up someone else's 26" for size comparison. It was caught on Nov. 21 1998 ice fishing at Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada on the Red River. It was caught on a jig and salted minnow. It was kept to be mounted. It is the only large one I have kept and normally release any under 3.5 lbs.
Thanks

Jack Brown

Jim,
Thought you might be interested in this fish. She is 23 1/2 inches long and is estimated by most pros I know to be around 13.5 lbs. Also I compared it to the photo of Vickers fish. His is slightly longer but mine is much fatter. I caught her in a lake near Coppell TX on March 8 2003. I was using 6 lb. line and a 1/16 ounce white Roadrunner! Unfortunately I had no way of keeping her alive for Share a Lunker, did not want to kill her, so she was released after the photos.

Species: Largemouth Bass
Name: Seth Furmanek
Age: 14 (turning 15 on 12/31)
Body of water: Saguaro Lake
Catch location: between the ranger station and the first boat ramp
Bait: 10 inch Castaic plastic
Method: trolling
Date: 12/27/02
Time: 9:45 AM
GREETINGS,
My son, Seth, asked for a day fishing trip for his upcoming 15th birthday. Since he's participating in a national baseball tournament this next week during his actual birthday (12/31), we decided that we would set aside today for our outing. We rented a boat at Saguaro Lake this morning and by 9:45 am, Seth had landed this 8 1/2 lb pig. He was fishing with a 10" Castaic plastic. The hog engulfed the entire lure, broke the surface and then went deep. After taking a couple of photos, she was released back to fight another day.
I guess the trout plastics are working.
Thanks for your time,

Rick Furmanek

Length: 28 inches
Girth: 19 inches
Lure: DD22 crankbait
Tackle: 17lb. Trilene with a Bass Pro reel and a 7' rod
Angler: Jarrod Moore, TX

My name is Jarrod Moore and I thought you would like to put my fish on your website. I caught it at a 15 acre private lake near my house, in the 10' Pond Prowler boat pictured in the back of my truck at 6:45 on Sept. 27, 2002 before I went to work. The bass weighed 14 lbs, 28" long, and 19" at girth. I caught it on a "DD22" crankbait on 17lb. Trilene with a Bass Pro reel and a 7' rod in about 13 feet of water. I am from Corsicana, Texas.

Tackle: Cardiff Shimano on a 6 1/2' Med/Hvy Shimano Speedmaster Fightn Rod with 20lb Renegade line
Tommy's 7 lb Largemouth bass
My name is Tommy Ogle and I'm from Louisville, Kentucky. I caught this fish from a place where I had caught a 5lb 2oz largemouth. On about the tenth time I even wet my bait that day. I pitched my bait in about 2' of water on the outside of a overhanging limb of a tree. I pulled my 7" blue and black plastic worm back in in very muddy water and felt the fish hit it. I reeled down close to the water and since I was bank fishing set the hook with a hard sidewards sweep. I locked into the jaws of a 7lb 12oz largemouth. He put on an unbelivible battle that had my adreniline about to squirt out my ears. I grabbed the line and pulled him about 2 ft to me because I could hardley reel because he was pulling my drag out so much (even though I had it set pretty high).

After I landed him I ran to my house across the street and got my mom to drive up to Wal-mart to get some batteries for the camera while I sat in about 2 ft of water to keep him arriated and alive. When she got back we took plenty of pictures and weighed him on a digital scale. Then I continued to arriate him for about 2 hours waiting for my dad to get home. He was very happy that I had caught it and said I should mount it; so very sadly that beautiful fish died and will be hanging on the wall in about a month or two. I look back on it and wish I would have let him go. But even the pond owner persuaded me to mount the fish because it was overpopulated with fish (even though most of them small). But that feeling of that fish being on, and pullen really good is not replaceable and I will remember it for the rest of my life. I oneday hope to be a professional angler on the B.A.S.S. pro tour. And even though I am only 12 years old I think I will catch one bigger.

Having a love of fishing I couldn't resist looking at your site.  I scanned through the pictures and thought that mine needed to be up on your site as well.  I caught this 25 inch, 8 pound 14 ounce largemouth bass on Lake Conner in Amelia County, Virginia on April 13, 2002. Using a 6 ft. medium action spincast - on 8 pound test using a Zoom Superfluke on a 3.0 hook.  Had a really good time reeling this one in I can tell ya - I nearly fell out of the boat.  Thought you might like to take a look at this one.

Jim,

P.S.
Jim,
Thank you for making my fish an exhibit. I realize that it isn't a large laker, but I felt that some of the situations we put ourselves in to catch these fish deserved some respect. On the particular day I caught this fish, I read the thermometer through the window at -30 degrees Fahrenheit. I suited up and stepped outside to be hit square in the face by a stiff wind. The determination we have, at times, is character in its very definition. I also have to give my appreciation to the steady & skilled hands behind the camera. (The orange on the picture is the sun peaking over the tree tops.) If my intuition is correct, you will see an increasing number of photos of "Beeg Feeesh" from Minnesota.
Thanks again,
Donny Knoph

Hello at Carpio,
I did not see any Gar pictures in the list, so I thought I would send in my Longnose Gar I caught a few years back in Southern Wisconsin.  Was fishing for Largemouth Bass at dusk with a Zara "Spook" surface lure when this guy nailed it.  Good fight, I had no idea what I had on the line until I got it to the boat.  Handling them in the boat is tricky, very slimy and eel-like- can not get a good grip when they are writhing all over (and they are lively!).  Took many pictures and released him back.  Am hoping he's added a foot or so and would like to catch him again!  The lure has many nice tooth marks as souveniers from the catch.  Really enjoy the website and am still trying for my first carp.  Best,
Matt Gregory - Illinois

Marc Hutchison, staff member at River Smallies.com, was floating the New River in WV on Feb.08, 2001 when he hooked this nice muskie.  Marc was trying out his new fishing rig - a Shimano Scorpion 1000 reel on a Falcon Cara rod.  He had the reel spooled with 8# McCoy Mean Green line and baited with a live minnow.  The battle lasted a total of 17 minutes as Marc's friend, Kevin, looked on.  The muskie was 38.5" long and weighed 18.4lbs.  Marc received a citation from the WV DNR and was admitted to the "Husky Muskie" club.  After the official weighing and a few photos, the muskie was released.

...Casting with the breeze onto the beach, I jerked the shad into a couple of feet of water and into the weeds.  The weeds began to grab at the shad and I snapped it through them - all except one weed.  That one  began to swim toward the boat!  I couldn't crank the slack in fast enough to set the hook until the fish stopped swimming about 15 feet from the boat.  The hook set was solid and the drag on my reel gave away.  He took off, circling the boat in three feet of weeds, coming all the way around to the lake side of the Sea Nymph.  Standing his ground in the weeds, I pulled hard on the line.  In slow motion we saw this behemoth stand on his tail, one giant gaping mouth - my shad strung a foot higher on the line.  Get the net Bobby, we need a picture of this one.  A couple of strong runs later, I dragged the fish closer and Bobby scooped him expertly into the net, along with enough salad to feed a horse.  Time for a pic and release...

27.5 lb. Chinook
Hi guys,

Here's a few of the fish we had over the weekend, the second picture shows an 18 lb and 19 lb Chinook that we had on dipsy divers at the same time.  There's nothing like a good double header to start the day.  We boated a total of 15 fish in 2 days including a couple of nice Rainbows and a good Coho.

All the best,

Hi Guy's,

love your site, I thought you might like this picture of a beautiful Brown Trout that I caught last Fall.  I got it while fishing for pike in Ontario, it took my white Spinnerbait and was an extremely clean and healthy fish weighing in at 20lb 8oz.

Here's one of my guides, Drew Primrose with a 34lb Chinook salmon he got a few weeks ago also on Lake Ontario.  We have been having a lot of success for the Salmon this year.
