Bait: Live bluegill

Hello! I just came across your website and love it. I thought I would submit a picture of my biggest flathead to date. I
caught it last July (7/6/05) out of the Maumee River on a live bluegill. I was using a 7ft medium action rod and a ABU Garcia 6500
reel spooled with 30# test. It was a great fight and a great catch for me. I released the fish back into the water to grow even
bigger. I weigh 300lbs to give you an estimate on how big it was. We guessed it at close to 50lbs. Thanks and Tight Lines and

Daine with a forty lb. flathead - WV
Angler: Daine Sellers
Species: Flathead
Weight: 40 Pounds
Bait: Live bluegill
Location: Ohio River, WV
Date: Summer 2003
I am sending this picture on behalf of my fiancee. He looks at your site often and loves it. His name is Daine Sellers and he
caught his catfish out of the Ohio River near Sistersville, WV. During the summer of 2003. He caught a 40 lbs flathead catfish. The
bait he used was a blue gill, approx as big as a hand. The fish was released. The point to this is he believes they are at least
somewhat territorial. The reason for this belief is the same fish was caught two weeks later on the same dock in the same hole, by his
friend A.J. Meeks. The reason knowing it was the same fish is because the fish was missing an eye and it had distinct markings on the
side. It had lost approx 15 lbs in the two week period maybe due to shock or some unkown reason. Daine would also like to know if you
or anyone has experienced this type of incident with the catfish being territorial to any extent. Thank you for your time, Nikki Sims

the first pole then put it in its holder as i just casted the second one the other pole started bending down like a boat caught on it
so i threw the pole down and ran over and jerked it so hard my arms about flew off.it just stuck like i snagged a rock .but i could
very lightly and slowly feel him comeing in so i just kept on slowly pulling and reeling i just started get it to the shore and a big
clup of scum and weeds came up like 2 feet in diametieron 4 feet long .i jumped down and pulled the weeds off to uncover a 26 ilb
flathead!!!!!it was worth the 25 minutes it took to drag him in to be the biggest fish i have ever caught.

Weights: Flathead 51 lb, Blue Catfish 25 lb
Location: Mississipi River, MO
Anglers: Mike Stuhr and Jeff
Here is a couple from the Mississippi south of St. Louis. These are rod and reel catches. The fellow with the little one has caught one blue cat two pounds bigger than the flat head (54 as opposed to 52#) but we only took regular lilm pictures of it. All of our fish are released back to the river with the exception of this flathead which was gobbled up by river beggars for a fry.
How about that 121# blue from Texas? Maybe everything is bigger down there. I came here looking for pictures of it. If I find one I'll post it.
Thanks

Hey this catch was all in one day's work.......the biggest fish was about 30 lbs. if not more. it bottomed out our scale because our scale only goes up to 30 lbs. so it probably was more. Then the 28 lb. came next then all the Blue Cats....we lost one blue cat but we weren't worried about it. Hope you like the pics.

Khale hook and Berkley Trilene Big Game 20 pound test. This is the biggest

Species: Channel Catfish
Weight: 18lbs 4oz
Where: Smith Mt Lake, VA - fished the Indian Creek channel
Bait: Live shad
Tackle: 7ft eagle claw striper popping rod, with the finger handled filed down with a diawa saltwater spinning reel with 20lb big game, mustand 7/0 circle-C hook
Angler: Travis Patsell
Was fishing for flatheads in smith mt lake, virginia and landed this channel cat. my biggest channel so far, weighed 18lbs 4ounces. caught off live shad. was drifting a creek channel, in around about 20-22ft of water about 5:45 in the morning, using a 3way rig with a 3/4 bell sinker just enough to keep it ticking the bottom, with a 7/0 mustad circle-C hook The cat had no tail for some reason, probally due to a younger accident. She still pulled like a 40lb flathead!!! when she surfaced... being just low light, i thought she was a blue cat (being not many in smith mt lake) untill i got her in and shined a light on here.. sure enough was a channel!!
Keep'e lines tight!

Species: BLUE CATFISH
Weight: 35 1/2 POUNDS, Holiday Marina scales, Wills Point, Texas
Fate: Kept And Enjoyed
Date: 03/01/03
Where: Lake Tawakoni, Texas; Rains County Side
Bait: Live Bait, Worm
Angler: Capp Peace, Age 15, Canton, Texas
Boat: Key Largo
Tackle: Falcon Rod and quantom reel, 12 pound test, no dip net
I thought you might want to see this fish. Capp Peace, Canton , Texas , was fishing alone , with worms, for channel catfish at Thousand Trails area of Lake Tawakoni, Texas . He hooked up on this blue cat and following it with his boat, eventually boated it . The fish was worked in after circling several trees and other brush. His dip net was the crappie variety, and too small. He boated it with one hand in the mouth. This is the second large cat he has caught. The first was caught in gravel pit alongside the Trinity River and released without weighing or measuring but was seen by veteran fisherman who estimated it at 40 pounds.

Jim,
I enjoyed seeing the pics on your website! I didn't see any 'cat' pics,
though. I'm an admitted catfish novice - but I've definitely been
'hooked' by the tenacity of these fine fish. Here is a pic of a recent catch of
mine. I caught this 12lb, 4oz fish (31 inches long)at a local lake
(Laguna Niguel Lake).
The specifics:
Heavy Cover (bullbrush), small-island inlet
Fresh cut-bait (mackerel)
20lb Big Game
Cabela's King Kat Spinning Rod
Okuma Epixor EB Reel
Owner Mutu Light Circle 2/0
I caught this cat about a minute-and-a-half after landing a 5lber. I
still had the other cat in the net when I hooked this one. I fought this one
on my knees with one hand while trying to untangle the fins of the other
cat. This cat made several runs back into the brush after I had initially
'horsed' him out. What's funny is that I know better to fish more than one rod in heavy
cover...I was lucky to land this one!
He made fine table fare, though. Tight lines!

Hey Jim,
My friend caught this 4 lb. white catfish on meal
worms at a local lake. There aren't very many white
catfish caught in San Diego and I really didnt think
one would come out of Santee Lakes- one of the most
hardest places to catch fish over 2 lbs. The fish was
released.

Weight: ~121 lbs ??
Angler: Randy Tobey
I've have caught lots of
these, but only took pictures of only a few. Most were caught on
14# or 16# test trylene xl the rod was a Daiwa Eliminator 15' rod and my old Quantum QSS
8 reel. I was fishing at a dam in the open gates - the water was fast running
and about 30' deep.
I was 180# in the pic. and
I'm 5'9" so take a quess what the blue weighed. Hint...... I should have
applied for the Alabama state record, which is about 10lbs less than mine.

Hello again, I could’t stand
sending my buddies picture and not send one of mine. This is the
biggest blue I`ve ever caught. Caught 9-15-01 this blue weighed in
at 41lbs. Using a live goldie (3 inch) about 5 feet deep, using a
Zebco Brute reel, and a heavy action Signature 9` rod. Stren 20 lb.
is the best I`ve found for slip bobber fishing, About 10" or so.
It does`nt float around as bad as other brands. This fish stripped
all my line out and I had to walk the bank to tire him out. What
a blast. Don`t get no better than that. |
