Rick and son with some nice commons - Canada

Anglers: Owen and dad Rick
Type: Common
Location: Quappelle River in Saskatchewan, Canada

Hi Jim, I am sending 2 pics the one nice specimen fell to a pineapple boilie fished over trout pellets and corn with some scattered boilies. The other carp with my Son's Beaver Scouts hat fell to a worm threaded on a barbless #1 hook. We were fishing the Quappelle River in Saskatchewan, Canada. My Son helped net the fish and I told him it was the biggest fish I have ever caught. He said "no it's the biggest fish WE have ever caught!" LOL! 6yr olds are great!

Barry with a near forty - South Africa

Angler: Barry Coatzee
Type: Common
Weight: 18 kg (~36.6 lbs)
Date: 03 March 2006
Bait: Mini boilie string on hair rig (Aniseed flavour)
Location: Rietvlei Dam, Pretoria, South Africa

Caught the 18 kg fish in the late afternoon at the start of a weekend that that delivered a fair range of carps. It rained quite heavily that raised the dam level by 30 cm in about 4 hours.

The original carp that were stocked in the Rietvlei Dam were originally imported from Germany in the 1950's and big ones are caught frequently. A catch and release policy is practised at the dam.
Thanks

From Tommy, biggies from Baltimore - MD

Hey Jimbo,
I missed out on seeing you again this year in Chicago but hopefully you had a great time. I took the much needed time playing on a local playing field. Here's a couple of really nice looking fish from Baltimore, Maryland USA. These fish were hard work - loads of prebaiting and my legs have just cleared up from the poison ivy :). Most of these fish came on boilies and the biggest fell to popped up maize :). Always enjoy looking on your site.

Nice common from down under - AUS

Type: Common
Weight: 16 lb
Bait: Bread flake
Location: Merri Creek, Melbourne, AUSTRALIA
Angler: Paul Bolte
Date: October 15, 2005

G'day Jim, Thought you may be interested in some carp pictures from Down Under. Some very big carp are known to frequent waters around Australia, especially in my home city of Melbourne.
I guess I am lucky as the carp is an often frowned upon fish and is hardly ever fished for. All the better for me and a few dedicated carp anglers.

The fish attached to this e-mail was caught a week ago on 6lb Maxima Chameleon line using bread flake as bait. It weighed in at 16lb. There are bigger fish to be caught where this fish was landed. I have had size 12 hooks straightened when fighting these tenacious fish. I will soon land a 20+ lb specimen from this water. Will keep you informed.

Fish released to fight another day.
Kind regards,
Paul Bolte

Nice small water mirror - UK

Type: Mirror
Weight: 24 lb
Bait: Tiger nut
Location: UK
Angler: Nev Morfitt

I have attached a pic of a 24lb Mirror caught by myself from a tiny farm pool close to where I live in the North of the UK. The carp in there have not been fished for until recently, and are difficult to trick. They feed almost exclusively on naturals; this one took a small Tiger nut fished hard under a tree in the margin

Fly fishing for Carp is one of the most challenging endevors I have taken on. So as part good luck charm and part showing respect to the species here is my carp tattoo that I have on my right calf. You may recognize it. I have 4 of your Carpe Carpio hats, and my two children each have one. I also have several of the t-shirts that you offer on your web site. Thanks

Grass carp on the fly - CO

Angler: Mark McMillan
Type: Grass
Weight: Unknown
Length: 36"
Date: 22 May, 2005
Location: Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
Method: Flyrod - sight nymphing

Love the pictures of HUGE carp on your website. Here's one that I caught on 22 May 2005 on a flyrod. It was a nice 36" female Grass Carp, that took a #12 Olive Damsel Fly about 12" below the surface.
She gave me four great runs, that really tested my 6 wt. The fight was about 20 minutes, and drew a small crowd. I love sight nymphing to cruising fish, and I got my money's worth with this one.

Several large Grassy's were cruising a channel through the weed beds of a local public pond. Numerous casts that were placed close to fish only resulted in spooked fish, so I decided to lead this particular fish by about 10 feet. As she swam into the zone, I saw her turn on the fly - I set, and the fight was on.

This is me holding my personal best. It was caught on spicy shrimp boilie with an inline method feeder while night fishing. I started fishing only a couple of months ago so I was really pleased with this catch. Completely perfect fish, no cuts or anything and it was caught in the margins. As you can see from my face, I was having a hard time holding it!

Peter from Melbourne, Australia

Angler: Peter
Type: Mirror
Weight: 23 lb 6 oz
Location: Kiewa River - Australia
Date: December 31, 2002
Bait: Sweet corn

G'day,
Awesome site, some whopper carp and very happy anglers.
Here's my effort....not very big, but a very satisfying mirror taken off a 5'6" trout rod on 4lb line in the crystal clear Kiewa River in North East Victoria, Australia, in a deep river hole over a sandy bottom. I actually hooked and lost this fish over several trips
(4lb line doesn't like being dragged over submerged trees by an angry carp) before I landed him. You can actually see the snags behind me in the photo.
The bait - normal canned sweet corn on a #6 chemically sharpened Gakamatsu gold-coloured hook. Bread crumbs mixed with canned corn juice used as berley.
The gear - Shimano Aerocast 3000 reel spooled with 3kg (6lb) Platil Strong ST line, with a Daiwa Turbo series graphite composite rod fitted with a quiver tip.
Terminal tackle - single running #1 bean sinker with barrel swivel and approximately 1 metre (33 inches) of 4lb (2kg) Maxima Chameleon leader.
Cheers,
Peter

Dean with a 23 lb mirror - UK

Angler: Dean Clowes
Type: Mirror
Weight: 23 lb 6 oz
Location: Chichester/West Sussex UK
Date: 2004
Bait: Richworth Boilie

I used two 10mm Richworth boilies. A sweetcorn flavoured boilie at the bottom of the hair and above this was a Richworth tutti frutti flavoured boilie. To give this extra attraction I used a small E.S.P PVA bag filled with goodness such as Elite 2mm pellet. I also placed a few freebies around the bait to attract them once this was done it was just the waiting game. This has caught me many other fish. The fish size was 23lb 6oz
My name is Dean Clowes and I fish local waters in Chichester/ West Sussex

Josh with an Idaho biggie

Angler: Josh
Type: Common
Location: Snake River, ID
Date: August 2001

I thought you might like a picture of a good sized carp from Idaho. My name is Preston and the picture is of my friend Josh. We were fishing on the Snake River in August 2001 when Josh hooked into this big carp while in a float tube, you can see the tube in the background.
The fish hauled him around in the tube for awhile. Josh didn't feel very safe hooked into a fish that big and being in a float tube for only his second time. Josh is a big guy and the float tube was small so you can imagine the excitement we had. So Josh headed to shore and finished the battle which lasted about 20 minute. We didn't measure or weigh the fish but it was a big one. I've enjoyed your site and hope this picture makes it.

Tom with a couple of FL grassies

Angler: Tom D'Auria
Type: Grass carp (amur)
Weights: ~10-20 lbs
Location: Florida

Hi, I'm Tom D'Auria from Boynton Bch., Florida. Here's a few pictures of some grass carp I caught a little while back. I catch them out of the lakes in my neighborhood, and I'm strictly Catch and Release. I usually catch them on floating bread, balled up pieces of bread with or without bobbers, and I once caught one on a strawberry. I'm not exactly sure how much they weigh, but my guess is somewhere between 10-20 pounds.

David G with a swampy grass carp, SC

Angler: David Graham
Type: Grass
Weight: 33 lbs (clean!)
Bait: Canned corn on single bait hook
Location: Lake Moultrie, SC (lower santee lake)

I have busted my @$#@^ to catch one of these tanks out here on Lake Moultrie and finally cracked the code... I heavily chummed a particular spot back in the cypress swamp with canned corn and rabbit food, went off for a little gar fishing action, caught a nice gar by the way... came back and they swarmed... I had two hookups and lost them both, 3rd time was the charm... got this giant 33 lb grass carp. apparently 33 lbs is easily enough to break my landing net in half to!

This is a picture of my nephews and I, Trevor (holding the Carp) and Jacob manning the flashlight. I would send you some with a little bigger fish but usually it?s only us three fishing and this is the only picture I have of the 3 of us. I think that was 12-14 lbs. We'll have to go out this weekend to add a larger one to your site! On our better days we catch them around 15-25lbs, not close to the monsters you have posted but all the fun catching! Wish us luck this weekend in SATX.

David G with a golden koi - OK

Thought you might like a pic of a golden carp I caught a this summer on my Oklahoma trip... I was fishing a small dam'd up pond near a park that was loaded with thousends of small jeuvinile commons and mirrors when I spotted this golden carp in the mix. It stood out so well I never lost site of it... I missed it the first day but the next day I came back, had them all chummed up with bread crust on the surface, I managed to draw the golden one from the others and cast out a peace of floating bread crust and got hooked up on the ultralight... This is definately a great story for me! Ive seen a few golden carp pics around the net but not at carpecarpio...yet!

I also tangled with this beast common while here, Im not going to lie or stretch the truth it was just over the mid 14 lb range, but practiced carp holding methods can add on a few pounds in the pic! This one was landed on the fly rod off the surface with a pretty odd "fly" we would chum the surface with bread, then soak white sponges in corn juice and tie them onto the fly rod... didnt work so well but worked enough to fool this bus.

The "Carpist" with a St. Lawrence 40!

Angler: Chris "Carpist" Labucki
Type: Common
Weight: 40.9 lbs
Location: Brandy Creek, NY
Home: MA

nice shirt ;o)

..So there I was at the brandy creek swim and I tell myself that after breaking off two monsters in the morning perhaps I should change to a longer snag leader. Just to keep the carp honest I cast in the two salmon rods I was using at Wilson Hill with the baits that were still on the hair. Half way through the leader make up I decided it would be a good idea to set up the net in case Flipper decided to make a run for it. I had one arm in the spreader when the secret bait rod went to bleeping and hopping. Not a screamer, but enough to merit a strike. I was in with a heavy fish that headed out and up for a change and soon I was looking at a mini whale.

The net was not set up and it was 50 feet away by the van.

I actually put the reel in freespool to let the fish swim away from the margin and I held the rod high and ambled back to the van to get the net. The orca was reeled back in close and tucking the rod between my legs I got the net set and pulled her in. Holy crap! I went into panic mode because I was looking at the biggest live carp I have ever seen.

40.9 pounds of St Lawrence gold!!!

For Chris' entire St. Lawrence trip report check out here.

This is a picture of my most recent carp. I had my carp pole out in my back yard with corn on it and did'nt have one hit. About six feet away I had my light pole out with a peice of earthworm on it for some bluegill. It was cold and windy out and I was about ready to call it quits when my light pole had a hit on it, I was waiting for another tap when my pole just took off and this is the results of what was on the other end.

Type: Common Carp
Weight: ~37 lb, 36 in
Location: Red River, Manitoba CANADA
When: August 2003
Angler: Wayne Gee
Bait: Corn
Hi Jim
Could you please put this picture on your site, I am trying to promote carp fishing in Manitoba as a legitement sport lots of people here look at carp as a garbage fish. this picture will show them and others in Canada that Manitoba has great carp fishing. This fish was caught on the Red River. Manitoba, Canada 1\2 mile north of the Lockport Dam, just below Cats on the Red resort. Used corn on size 4 hook under a Peter Drennan float, using the lift method, it measured 36" and weight 37lbs give or take a few ozs. It was my first fish of the day I caught about 8 more from 5- 20lbs in 3 hrs. The red river north and south of the Lockport dam is loaded with carp and catfish. there have many days I will catch 20 - 30 carp in a day but i have caught all my bigger fish North of the dam and up nearer Lake Winnipeg. If any one is interested in carp or catfish go to catsonthered.net they are very helpful in putting you on the fish.

Spring is here!

How you doin'?? All well I hope.

Didn't have much luck with the Mahseer in India, but had a great holiday and managed to get a few cats from the beach while sipping cocktails with my girlfriend!!!

The Season on our lake has kicked off and as I predicted my mates Mark and Gan have had some superb action on a few short sessions resulting in three of the lakes BIGGEST residents!!

Here is Mark with his new pb - Gertie at 34lb, (and as soon as I get the photos) and the Grey Lady at over 33lb!!!! Not bad for two short sessions - 2 Thirties in a couple of days!

And as for Gan he has just smashed his personal best on a short day session with this very hard fighting long Common which is probably the biggest Common in the lake which pulled the scales round to 26lb 4oz.

All fish we have had have come from similar situations (very tight margins) with Activ8 boilees.

Keep up the good work Jim.

A pair or Mirrors - Assiniboine River, CAN

Hello Jim

Here are pictures of 2 of my mirror carp I have caught. The first one is 24" long and the 2nd is about 28". They were both caught in the Assiniboine River at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. They were both caught using corn on a single barbless hook. I usually fish for them alone and have no one to take the pictures. Here is also a picture of my favorite carp hole. Lots of 15 to 20+ lbers., but few mirror carp. This is what happens when you put the juice from a can of corn in the water. Hope you will post them and thanks.

Hi Jim!
In 1994 having a spinal cord disease I had a spinal cord injury and was 100% paralyzed from the neck down......it took major therapy to get me to a somewhat normal lifestyle again......(never the same after a spinal cord injury).....With having very little muscles, in May of 2002, I was able to pull in a 34" (over 20 lb. carp from Neonawanta Lake in Fulton, NY)......quite an accomplishment for me!! I do have to admit that my husband had to hold me & the pole while I reeled as it would have pulled me in, being as small as I am, under 100 lbs.

Just thought I would pass this pic on to you. Pursuing carp on a fly is a hobby of mine. I met this one in Hamilton, Ontario. The fight was incredible and lasted nearly an hour on an 8 wt rod with an 8 lb test level leader. She fell for a cased caddis nymph. The fish measured ~ 36 x 27 inches and was released unharmed after posing for a few pics.

Giant Siamese Carp from Thailand

Dear Jim,

I believe you will love that pic of my good friend Lung Dam posing with the biggest catlocarpio ever caught with a rod and line here in Thailand.  That helluva carp was estimated at 110 kg. (~243 lbs.!) It took him some time and a lot of team work (you need to be at list 3 guys to help) before landing that fish as you can guess.

I already fought a dozen of specimens I estimate being largely over 80 kg and unfortunately I lost them all. They are more than very powerful and there is nothing you can do to stop them on the first rush. The fish snagged everytime my line in the various obstacles of the lake I am fishing often.

We are experts for years to save the catch.  We have to do that all the time with huge Mekong Giant Catfish. The operation is to swim, find the snagged line underwater, spool out the line from the reel, free it, cut it, tie it again, and fight the fish again. But those giant carps are much smarter than Cats. They don't snag you once, but 6 or 7 times around the pillars of a wooden bridge.  By the time you find out the last piece of snagged line, those giant fish have either broke the line or got unhooked. No worries, that is part of the game fishing, one of these days I'll land one helluva carp ! It has to happen !

From Dean, South Africa

Dear CarpeCarpio

Myself and three friends went for a mid week break away for three days to a Nature Reserve where you actually get dropped by boat on an island to fish.  The weather was terrible from the moment that we arrived (Monday).  It rained and the wind blew the whole of Monday, Tuesday that we didn't even manage to get one bit, but things suddenly started to change early hours of Wednesday morning when the WIND suddenly disappeared.

I landed a fish of 11.01pounds (5kg) just before 7 AM.  About 45 minutes later my rod went screaming off again and I landed a 23,13 pound (10,5 kg) Common.  (see picture).  That was my personal record and it made the trip all the more worth while.   PS.. thanks for such a wonderful and informative site #1

Jim, ... took her on a small jigging spoon at Pickering power plant out-flow in Ontario. They are stacked up in there right now feeding on all the bait that is getting sucked in the intake and blown out the outflow in chunks. I had about 20 Carp from there this week to about 25lbs. They seem to hit anything in there right now in the current. They'll even take power grubs on jig heads. We don't get too many Mirrors around here so I was very happy getting one this size. All the best,

Shaun

Hello Jim, my name is Dan, I live in Utah and I fish almost exclusively for Carp.  They are my favorite species.  I also fish for stripers, catfish, tarpon, bonefish, sturgeon, largemouth, smallmouth, sunfish, northern, trout, and basically any thing that swims.  About 90 percent of my fishing is with a fly rod, especially for Carp.  I live where there is some very good Carp fishing.

There is a giant lake with water the color of the caribbean and endless white sand flats.  The carp are all fully scaled mirror carp with the giant scales.  I have fished the Keys, Sea of Cortez, and the Yucatan and those carp flats on that lake are as much fun as any of them.  The fish average about 8 lbs., but some get up around 20.  There are also many other lakes such as Lake Powell that are excellent for carp - we have even caught many on the surface.

There is a spot about 20 min. from my house that is a warm spring with carp that I fish in the winter - it is all mud flats so a canoe is best.  Last spring I gave my self a flats skiff and had the best summer of fishing yet.  I am getting cabin fever bad, can't wait for spring.  Well it's good to know there are other carp lovers out there.  I like the hats and shirts I should order something.  Long live the CARP - the bigger the better.

GOOD FISHING, DAN THE CARPSLAYER.

Hey carpio, how's it going?  I was checking out your site and joined your mailing list and I'm sending you a few pics of me and my son - these are a few of the fish we catch here in Marquette Park lagoon.  My son is now a true carpsman for life.  Someday I hope to see him win the Classic on the river.  I hope you remember me - I talked to you at the Tinley Park show, and well I see you around a lot.  I'm a member of CAG.  Well I hope you post up the pictures I've sent you.  The one I'm holding is a grass carp - this thing must have been like 4 feet long - a real beauty - my personal best to date!  See you and keep in touch

50 pound mirror carp from Rudi Hey Jim,
My name is Bru Rudi, I live in Belgium and my favourite way of spending my vacation is carp fishing in foreign countries.  Here's a big European mirror carp weight 23.2 Kg (50lb 11 oz).
Caught in May 2000 in perfect condition.  I also want to mention that the fish was returned in his natural environment, this is really important to me - the NO KILL fishing.  This way we can become some really big specimens.
Anyway love your site.

Hi, it's Laurent from France

Here's two more carp I caught this weekend (June 10-11, 2000), of course released after the photo.  The location is one lake near Paris (45 km to the south).  Since March, I have caught 18 carp as follows (in kg): 3, 3, 4, 5.6, 6, 6.6, 7, 7.5, 7.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10, 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5 and 16 (~ 6.6 - 35.2 lbs)
The bait were boilies made with components of an English recipe I've used for 10 years:
1 kg fish mix
1 tsp appetite stimulator-fish
10 eggs
10 ml Rod Hutchinson Monster Crab flavour
20 ml salmon oil
20 ml amino acid - Ambio Feeding Trigger
10 ml fresh salmon
5 ml sweetener

Jim-
here is a 25 pound 2 ounce little pig.  It has the head of a fifteen pounder, but it was a real eating machine.  I caught it on a hair with eleven kernels of feed corn. The hair was over three inches long.  Come on down to the Lake -plenty of room.

Angler:  Ian Kempster

It was a bitterly cold morning (we had actually fished through the night) and it had been light for about half an hour when I saw a fish stick its head out in front of me, about 30 yards away.  As I had a bait positioned halfway between myself and the fish I decided to wait for an hour and not re-cast as the fish in this lake are notoriously spooky.  20 minutes later this beauty picked up my bait (a home made milk protein boilie flavoured with John Baker's excellent Plum, brilliant winter attractor for cold weather conditions).  After a short scrap of 5 minutes or so it was in the net and one happy angler let the rest of the lake know about it by screaming like a banshee!!  The fish weighed 28lb 10oz and remains my best winter caught fish.
